Atletico Madrid face €25M demand for Santiago Almada
Argentine midfielder Santiago Almada, a star at Atletico Madrid, could return to South America. Flamengo, interested in signing him, have set a price of €25 million, according to statements from their sporting director, José Boto. Almada, 25, joined the club last season from Botafogo and played 40 games under Diego Simeone.
The Madrid side finished the 2025 season in 4th place with 57 points (17 wins, 6 draws, 8 losses), scoring 51 goals and conceding 32.
Why does Almada want to leave Atletico Madrid?
Though Almada had a decent season, rumors suggest he doesn’t feel comfortable in Madrid. The Argentine, former Atlanta United player, has expressed his desire to return to Argentina or Brazil. River Plate also showed interest, but their sporting director, José Boto, ruled out a bidding war.
What does Flamengo say about the transfer?
José Boto, Flamengo’s sporting director, was clear: "We will not participate in bidding wars. Do you know how many transfers of €20M or more have been made in Brazilian football? Only seven! As president, I must prevent the club from going bankrupt."
What’s next for Almada and Atletico Madrid?
Almada’s future remains uncertain. While Flamengo have set a price, Atletico Madrid have yet to respond. The team’s next match is against Málaga on February 28, 2027, in La Liga.
