La Liga president Javier Tebas has responded to Real Madrid's complaints about refereeing in the recent derby, stating the rival club did not lose the match due to controversial incidents involving Romero and Lee Kang-in. Atlético Madrid's 2-1 victory at the Metropolitano last Friday keeps Diego Simeone's side second in the table with 16 points from seven games.
Tebas addressed two specific first-half incidents, one involving Jude Bellingham and Cuti Romero and another with Fede Valverde and the Atlético midfielder, which were not punished with red cards. "El Madrid no perdió por esas jugadas" (Real Madrid did not lose because of those plays), the league president stated. Regarding the complaints from Madrid and their TV channel, he added: "Entiendo las quejas pero no las formas" (I understand the complaints but not the manner).
The response comes at a time of high confidence for Atlético, who are on a three-game winning streak in La Liga, including a 4-0 win over Osasuna. The derby victory, with goals from Grimaldo and Jonathan David, leaves the team five points behind leaders Barcelona. Their next fixture is a trip to face sixth-placed Alavés after the international break.
