Atlético Madrileño's poor run continued with a 2-1 defeat away to Gimnàstic de Tarragona at the Nou Estadi Costa Daurada. It marks a fifth consecutive match without a win for the reserve side, who have now gone three losses and two draws since their last victory.
The match, on the eighth matchday of Primera Federación's Group 2, started badly for Fernando Torres's team. Josep David Menargues opened the scoring for Nàstic with a stunning shot from inside his own half that caught goalkeeper Ander Astralaga off guard. Atlético Madrileño reacted and had chances to equalise, with a shot from Dani Pérez going just wide and a header from Kamate being cleared off the line by a home defender.
Despite creating more chances and having the better of the first half, Atlético Madrileño went into the break behind. The hosts' second goal came in the 55th minute from Segura following a mistake by Kamate. Torres's substitutions, bringing on Javi Aznar, Álvaro Justo and Koke Mota from the 65th minute onwards, gave the team more energy. Koke Mota pulled a goal back from the penalty spot in the 81st minute after a foul by Almansa, but there was no time for an equaliser. Nàstic, who played the final minutes with ten men after Almansa's red card, managed the final result.
The loss stands in stark contrast to the senior team's excellent form, as they sit second in the La Liga standings and are on a five-match winning streak. Atlético Madrileño's next task is to find a way back to winning ways, while the first team prepares to host Deportivo La Coruna on Saturday 24 October at the Metropolitano. Fernando Torres will have to find solutions to recover defensive solidity and improve efficiency in the boxes.
