Atletico Madrid have turned down a request for a face-to-face meeting from Julian Alvarez following a transfer saga that has seen Barcelona eyeing him as their priority target.
The situation has been in the spotlight ever since the summer transfer window commenced, with Alvarez making no secret of his wish to leave Atletico. His desire to join Barça is well-documented and considered his dream destination.
Despite this apparent eagerness, Atletico have held firm on their stance, refusing any negotiations or discussions with Barcelona about the player's future until further notice.
According to Gerard Romero of Jijantes FC, the Argentine player approached Atletico’s directors in Madrid, requesting a meeting. However, his request fell on deaf ears.
"Atletico have informed him that no immediate talks will take place,” Romero explains, “and that they expect to see him when he returns for training on August 10.”
The club’s decision is clear - Atletico are committed to maintaining control over the timing of this situation. They prefer that Alvarez reports back for pre-season alongside other players returning post-World Cup instead of engaging in any form of negotiation during his holiday.
For Barcelona, this request for a meeting carries significant weight. It highlights that Alvarez wants direct clarity on his future and is attempting to force Barça's hand into signing him sooner rather than later. Atletico’s refusal to meet face-to-face is another sign they are aware of the player's intentions and aim to call the shots.
August 10 could be a pivotal moment in this saga, as it marks the return date for training, which could potentially lead to a resolution or escalation in proceedings. If Alvarez does not report back by then, Atletico might have no choice but to make decisions about his future.
Barcelona have already begun looking at alternatives to Alvarez; Sporting director Deco has identified Bournemouth’s striker Eli Junior Kroupi as one potential target. However, with his status still up in the air and a refusal of communication from Atletico for now, Barcelona cannot yet build their summer strategy around this single player.
The outcome of the remaining few weeks will likely determine how this saga plays out. Whether Barça waits for Alvarez, moves on to Kroupi, or opts to start the season without another striker, much depends on the developments in the coming days and weeks.
