Atletico Madrid Closer to Securing Romero
Atletico Madrid and Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly very close to finalizing a transfer deal worth around €40 million for Cristian Romero, with the move expected to be completed soon. According to Fabrizio Romano, the transfer fee is approximately €40 million, which would significantly strengthen Atletico's defensive lineup.
Romero has given his approval for the move, and it seems that Arsenal was never a realistic option for him or his representatives. Tottenham refused to consider selling Romero to their local rivals, which likely sealed the deal in favor of Atletico Madrid.
Romero’s Camp Opened Talks with Arsenal
Despite the final decision going towards Atletico Madrid, Romero's camp showed interest in moving to Arsenal. According to insider reports from HandofArsenal and Paul O'Keefe, Romero was open to joining the Gunners but ultimately chose to stay loyal to Tottenham.
O'Keefe previously broke news of Romero’s new contract with Tottenham, adding credibility to his claims about the player's interest in moving abroad. However, Tottenham's refusal to entertain an Arsenal transfer made it clear that the move would not happen.
The deal is expected to bring Romero to Spain for the first time, where he will look for his first domestic victory of 2026 with Atletico Madrid.
