Diego Simeone now has his long-desired defensive leader as Atlético de Madrid finalizes the signing of Cristian Romero. Romero is expected to arrive in Madrid on Thursday for a medical examination before signing a contract until 2031.
Romero could make his debut next Wednesday when Atlético de Madrid kicks off the 2026/27 LaLiga season against Málaga at home. Sporting director Mateu Alemany has secured this deal for €40 million, with an additional €5 million in bonuses, bringing the total to €35 million fixed and another €5 million variable.
Romero's transfer comes after Atlético de Madrid attempted to sign him last summer but was faced with Tottenham Hotspur's €80 million price tag. After a turbulent campaign where Romero publicly criticized club management multiple times, Spurs are now moving on from the 28-year-old center-back who has represented Argentina 58 times and led them to consecutive FIFA World Cup finals.
The player is expected to bolster Atlético de Madrid's defense, potentially forming a trio with Dávid Hancko and Marc Pubill in a 3-5-2 formation. He can also play alongside either Hancko or Pubill in a four-man defense setup.
